Bristol still continued to dominate the race overall, in fact
they won for the first 9 years in a row.

Then the tide turned and UWE's talent development and coaching
program started paying dividends.
In 2003 Peter Reed became the first UWE President to raise the Varsity Trophy. He went on to become a double blue for Oxford and a GB trials champion, an indication of the ever increasing quality of rowing involved in the Varsity.
